One of the most beautifully preserved ruins of Sweden, Kronoberg Castle ruins are found on an islet in Helgasjön lake of Växjö town. The historic castle fell into the hands of Nils Dacke in the 16th Century. The revolt was crushed and the castle came to be controlled by the local crown. Owing to its key location close to the border between Denmark and Sweden, it was further extended and turned into a defensive stronghold. The castle ruins are exhibited at the Smålands museum. Visitors can also explore the surrounding scenic beauty through a steam boat 'Thor', a 19th-century vessel.
