Old industrial communities are more prevalent in northern and central Sweden, but you will find one by the rapids of Mölndalsån, just a few kilometres out of Gothenburg. You will also find Kråkan which is a nice local bar. If you pass the paper mill, you will find beautiful old buildings on the slopes above the cafeteria. To get here, take tram 4 to the final stop. Cross the bridge and follow the road for a couple of hundred metres, then cross the next bridge on your right and you are there.
Especially in springtime, but also in summer or fall, the Botanical Gardens are a wondrous place to relax. Botaniska Paviljongen has a large outdoor section and is situated on a big lawn with some trees. If you are interested in botany, all the trees are labeled. Big windows give you a good view even from the inside. The café serves ice cream, cakes and small dishes. Various spices and herbs from the gardens are also for sale. Unfortunately the café is only open on weekends. To get here, take trams 1, 2 or 7 to Botaniska Trädgården.
Kafé Marmelad has its own unique style with three floors that includes a cozy basement that is especially popular during the winter months. The old fashioned light bulbs and radios that decorate the space, as well as the small rooms, gives the whole place a 1930s, jazzy feeling. You can also get some tasty bites like a variety of sandwiches on Ciabatta, lasagna, soups and salads. If you're not hungry, this is also a great place to grab a coffee or a drink.
The former premises of a teashop are now home to Delitalia. They serve coffee and tea, which you can enjoy whilst reading a newspaper. There is also a shop with delicacies, many of them Italian. Their specialties are fresh pasta, olive oil, tiramisù and balsamic vinegar. They also sell coffee beans and tea, and they can prepare a picnic basket for your afternoon in Slottsskogen or by the sea.
You can enjoy both food and drink at the Bitter Bar & Matsal. It's a trendy place that serves up delicious strawberry daiquiris. Ask for the white chocolate sprinkles on top and indulge your sweet tooth. Check website for additional information.
If you're looking for an activity to do while drinking coffee, then Pick-N-Paint is a great place to visit. Here you are invited to decorate your own ceramic item that you can then take home and display around the house. If you aren't feeling artistic, you can still come and hang out, but the fun is really getting into the paints. Be sure to make a reservation if you want to explore your pottery side.
The bar sometimes dominates the scene a bit too much at Karlson's Garage, but the guests always come first and the food is very inexpensive. The outdoor seating area on the terrace is always full in the summer, because it overlooks busy Linnégatan. Since the menu has an eclectic range of dishes at such low prices, the bar guests often have a bite with their beer. Traditional Swedish cooking, Chicken Tandoori, pasta and fish and chips, just to mention a few. The décor is pub-like, dark with plenty of wooden details.
Everything you need to know about this cafe is in the name, "Beans & Bagels": you can get excellent coffee and delicious bagels. The shop has a wide variety of bagel sandwiches all with names like Karin, Stefan and Frida. As you can see, the names don't tell you much, so you'll have to look up on the big board to choose which one you'd like. Rest assured there are plenty of options for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. You can also get a hot cup of soup to go with your bagel, if you need an extra something to round out the meal.
From the owners of Kock & Vin comes Familjen, a restaurant focused on modern Swedish cuisine. The space is designed to feel like a living room, drawing on the theme of family and home. Though you can order a la carte dishes like roast lamb, grilled pike-perch and raw beef, the main feature here is the three-course menu, which changes every night based on the freshest ingredients and the chef's choice.
Close to the bars and clubs at Avenyn, CT24 is open all night, catering for cab drivers and anyone else who happens to be awake. The cafe is dedicated to the comic book character and decorated accordingly. The tabletops are made of glass and underneath them there are cut-out pages from Tintin magazines for you to read. As at all 24-hour cafes, the prices are somewhat high, but what else is there to do if you don't want to go home?
If you make your way to the basement of the Elite Park Avenue Hotel, don't be surprised to find yourself in a British pub. The selection of spirits is huge, with more than hundred types of beer as well as single malt whiskeys. The food menu offers an extensive choice of pub grub and British favorites to complete the experience. Check website for more.
