The Ruddalens sports center in the southwestern borough of Frölunda of Gothenburg is surely a treat for all sports fans in the city. This center is abuzz with activities throughout the year, with tournaments and competitions in sports like soccer, skating, and the intriguing sport of bandy being organized here. This venue has been used for several major sporting events, including the soccer World Cup, over the years. Inside the center there are skating tracks and hockey rinks that are covered, except a special track for bandy that is outdoors. The sports center also has a gym and fitness center which can be used after paying a mandatory fee. The Ruddalens also leases its spaces for events, depending on availability and the kind of event. See website or call for more information.
Fysiken is the student sports center, but it is open to the public and the atmosphere here is often more relaxed than at the downtown gyms. Almost every activity you can think of is represented here, including salsa, aikido, volleyball, aerobics, indoor football, climbing and much more. It is possible to just use the gym or to join an organized activity, but you can also rent a hall. Physicians, massage, dieticians and physiotherapy are also available. A one-month complete membership costs SEK435 (EUR51.45) for non-students. To get here, take bus 60 to Pilbågsgatan.
Skatås Motionscenter is situated in a woody area east of the city. If you are not satisfied with just walking in the forest, then you have to drop by at this fabulous gym center. The prices are low compared to places in the center of the city. Along with the usual gym facilities, there is a solarium, a sauna, a cold pool and a cafe too. A few hundred meters away you will find a campsite. To get here, take tram 5 to Welandersgatan. Follow Olbergsgatan for one kilometer.
S.A.T.S. Sports Club is the result of a merger of several different gyms. They now have three facilities in Gothenburg. Among them is the one on Kungsgatan, close to the dome, many bars, restaurants and a fitness café. At S.A.T.S you can get all the different kinds of exercise a modern gym has to offer. To receive information about the daily schedule, call +46 31 13 7030 instead of the regular number. To get here, take trams 1, 2, 4 or 9 to Domkyrkan.
Friskis och Svettis is an unpretentious alternative to the flashier downtown gyms. It attracts people of all different ages and levels of fitness. In the summer, the outdoor aerobics in Slottsskogen is very popular, though some people might argue that they are ruining the lawns. Friskis och Svettis also has a lot of gyms all over town. Membership gives you access to all activities and facilities. To get here, take trams 1, 2, 4, 7 or 9 to Domkyrkan. Please call for timings.
Gothenburg does not have any exciting adventure pools for children, and the one in Lerum caters mostly to the youngest children. But if you continue inland you come to Stadsparksbadet in Boras. Apart from swimming pools you will find water slides, whirlpools, wave machines, a climbing wall and a jumping tower. There are also saunas to relax in, and tanning beds. Stadsparksbadet has been judged the most adventurous swimming pool on the west coast by the newspaper Goteborgs Posten. If you are driving here, take Riksvag 40 to Boras.
