Umeå, the largest city of Norrland province, is the unofficial capital of Sweden's wild and largely undeveloped northern half. Situated on the Gulf of Bothnia, the city's winters are somewhat mitigated by the waters of the Gulf. Nevertheless the city is obviously no tropical paradise and visitors outside of the summer should be prepared for severe conditions. On the flip side, the city does lie quite close to the arctic circle and in the summer months visitors are blessed with nearly 24 hours of daylight. The city is also home of the northernmost university in Sweden and features a vibrant student community as well as traditional Swedish civic life.
