    »Brand New

    October 22, 2014 8:00 PM

Brand New was formed in Long Island, New York, in 2000. Its debut album, Your Favorite Weapon, came out soon afterward, in 2001, and received remarkably good reviews. It wasn't long before its second album was released, Deja Entendu, which marked a stylistic change for the band. They play emo/alternative songs and have matured over the course of their career as far as the genre does, but always within pop punk. Their lyrics are a commentary on their experiences and they make references on society's beliefs, always trying to step outside the norm. The success of the band's following albums allowed them to start their own music label, "Procrastinate! Music Traitors," in 2008. If you like rock music, you will surely enjoy Brand New's works.

    »Bass Drum Of Death

    October 23, 2014

Bass Drum of Death is the brainchild of John Barrett, an indie rock musician from Mississippi. The band's name comes from its early days, when Barrett would perform solo with only an electric guitar and a bass drum around 2008, when he started the project. Soon after, Colin Sneed was recruited to play the drums full-time and the duo began cranking out noise-riddled garage rock nuggets full of lo-fi distortion and a punk rock pace. Bass Drum of Death released its debut LP, entitled GB City, in 2011, and has been touring the world and collaborating with the likes of the Odd Future collective ever since.

    »R. Kelly

    October 25, 2014 8:00 PM

Despite a tumultuous career full of brushes with the law and more than a few stylistic missteps, R. Kelly has managed to solidify himself as one the predominant forces of contemporary R&B. Born in Chicago in 1967, Kelly initially entered the music world as a member of the early 1990s group, Public Announcement. It didn't take him long to decide to branch out on his own, however, and in 1993 he released his debut LP, 12 Play. Working within the scope of everything from lite funk and slow jams, to hip-hop and soul, Kelly's career has always retained a chameleon-like ability to adjust to evolving musical styles and tastes. Casual fans may know him as the singer of popular hits such as "I Believe I Can Fly" and "Ignition," but it's the stranger, more ambitious aspects of Kelly's catalog (such as his 22 chapter hip-hopera, Trapped in the Closet) that have kept him an intriguingly enigmatic figure well into the 21st Century. In addition to his solo work, Kelly has produced, remixed, collaborated with or written songs for the likes of Michael Jackson, Celine Dion, Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston.

    »Drive By Truckers

    October 29, 2014 7:00 PM

Like most alt-country acts on the scene today, the Georgia based group Drive-By Truckers believes in the undaunted power of analog recording equipment. The group employs no real synthesized instruments--in fact, the group has three guitarists--and when the band goes into the studio, it prefers to lay down its songs on two inch tape as opposed to digital recording methods, the industry standards. The nostalgic approach to song writing/recording that Drive-By Truckers employs is working to the group's advantage, however. The band has been a favorite of critics ever since it released its debut LP in 1998 and with a rousing stage show that highlights each member's instrumental prowess, Drive-By Truckers has proven to be one of the more rewarding alt-country bands to track.

    »Sts9 Sound Tribe Sector Nine

    November 04, 2014 7:00 PM

Known simply as STS9, Sound Tribe Sector 9 has risen out of Atlanta, Georgia as one of the most renowned livetronica bands in the world since its formation in the late 1990s. Adjoining jam band rock, layers of keyboards, digitized sounds and elements pulled from funk, jazz, hip-hop and various electronic dance music genres, the band is a staple on the touring and festival circuit and has helped paved the way for so many of its opening acts including Snoop Dog, Bassnectar and Pretty Lights. Though largely considered electronic music, STS9 primarily uses instruments to create its music, relying on the virtuosic abilities of its members to take electronic music to new heights with jam band sensibilities. However, the band forgoes the heavy focus on solos found in traditional jam band music and subscribes more to a groove-based mentality, combining tight rhythms with swaths of electronic textures.
