Spread over an area of 48 square kilometers (18.5 square miles), Lake Der-Chantecoq is Western Europe's largest artificial lake and a popular destination for water sports lovers. Activities like sailing, wind surfing, water skiing, jet skiing, rowing are available to visitors along with fishing, rollerblading, cycling etc for the non-adventurous ones. It is also an ideal place for bird watching with species like the great egret, white tailed eagle, geese, ducks, grebes, loons and thousands of cranes migrating here during the spring and autumn due to the lake's rich natural habitat.
Built atop the remains of a medieval castle, the stately mansion of Château de Montmort is a grand sight to behold with its early Renaissance architecture, imposing towers and beautifully maintained park and gardens. The castle stone platform is believes to date back to the 11th Century, while the château itself was built in 1577. Today, it is a protected historical monument of France and can be visited by tourists between the months of July and August.
