Built in the year 1861, the ancient church of Tromsø Domkirke is considered to be the one of the very few wooden churches that have been saved by ravages of time and are operational even today. Constructed in Neo-Gothic style by Christian Heinrich Grosch, this church has brought fame to this architect. Also known as The Tromsdalen Church or The Arctic Cathedral, the Ishavskatedralen is a parish church built in the village of Tromsdalen and is an important modern landmark. This unique concrete structure was designed by the Norwegian architect Jan Inge Hovig and was completed in the year 1965. The entrance of the church is marked by a cross under a large glass facade on the western side and a magnificent piece of glass mosaic by Victor Sparre. The organ was installed in 2005 and comprises of 2940 pipes replacing the old opus. The church is also a popular venue for Midnight Sun concerts where various national and international artists have performed during the summer. A tiny lake nestled on Tromsøya island, Prestvannet offers splendid views of the neighboring landscape. A reservoir was built on the lake in the year 1867 and it remained in use till 1921. Ever since, the area surrounding the lake has been converted into a nature reserve and park land. The pond region remains a a breeding spot for several birds. A recreational track navigates around the pond and remains popular for trails and other activities. During winters, the pond freezes which makes it an ideal location for ice skating.
Located inside the University of Tromsø, is the wonderful botanical garden named Tromso Botaniske Hage. The garden is spread over a sprawling eighteen acres and has beautiful plants and tropical flowers growing here. The gardens also offers beautiful views of the valley beyond.
