Tampa, located on Florida's west coast, is a popular destination and port city. This city's skyline is dotted with skyscrapers displaying a variety of architectural styles. Tampa offers a variety of museums, aquariums and gardens. The area was first inhabited by the Calusa tribe, though Spanish conquistadors Narvaez and de Soto wiped out native populations through the transmission of new diseases. The area was mostly uninhabited for 200 years until the United States purchased the land to reduce attacks. While the area was mostly a frontier outpost in its early days, population boomed after the discovery of phosphate and a burgeoning cigar industry founded by Vincente Ybor which moved to Tampa at the end of the 19th Century.
