Indian Boundary Prairie

Route 57
Markham, IL 60426
+1 815 545 4536
The Indian Boundary Prairie is composed of a group of four separate prairies - Dropseed, Gensburg, Paintbrush and Sundrop - that together form what is Illinois' largest surviving expanse of grassland. Breathtaking vistas and new discoveries await around every corner. The prairies are home to a diverse and varied plethora of plants and wildlife, including a multitude of butterflies, birds and wild flowers. The landscape is forever changing, with new and wondrous sights to behold throughout the year. The preserve is managed by the Nature Conservancy and Northeastern Illinois University, in conjunction with the Friends of the Indian Boundary Prairies. Apart from serving as a safe haven for a variety of rare and endangered species, the prairies also form the perfect backdrop for a host of awareness and educational programs that highlight the importance of conserving our natural heritage. Visitors are welcome to explore the preserve on their own, and a number of pathways have been laid down to help guide the way. As you make your way through the preserve, keep an eye out for rare plant, butterfly and bird species including the eastern prairie white fringed orchid, the Aphrodite fritillary and great yellow legs. The preserve is open daily from dawn to dusk. Located just off Route 57, all four prairies lie within Markham's city limits.
