Reputedly the oldest town in Ireland, receiving its Royal Charter in 1613, it grew in prosperity during the 18th and 19th centuries due largely to its trading activities. Today it is an important shopping area in Donegal and a popular tourist venue, surrounded as it is by a wonderful coastline and attractive countryside. The town has plenty of reasonably priced accommodation of very good quality, including some fine old provincial hotels. Every year there is a major Folk festival held in August and, with its strong tradition of Irish music, some of the best musicians in the country can be heard in many of its pubs.
