As picturesque and peaceful as this lough may seem, locals will warn you to keep a wary eye out for the infamous Dobherchu. Legend has it that a local girl was mauled to death by this monster otter in September 1722. Her husband speared the creature, but its death cries awoke its mate. Emerging from the lough, this Dobherchu was even fiercer and chased the man and his brother for over 20 miles before they stood their ground and defeated it. Their tombstones in the local graveyard commemorate the event with accompanying illustration. It is believed that more Dobherchus live in the lough and still appear occasionally.
