Heapstown Stone Cairn

This Neolithic burial mound is as large as Queen Maeve's cairn on top of Knocknarea and is more accessible. At 20 ft high and 200ft wide at the base, it is a very impressive site and is traditionally believed to be the tomb of Aillil, the brother of King Niall of the Nine Hostages. Never excavated, it is presumed that a passage grave lies underneath the mound. The view from the top of the cairn is magnificent with a panorama of the surrounding hills, many with similar cairns on their summits. Contact the local tourist office for further information.
