Before the widely popular starlet Katy Perry became a well-known figure of the pop music scene, she had a modest career as a gospel singer.Born in Santa Barbara, CA to devout Pentecostal pastors, Perry grew up listening to Christian and gospel music, and she soon realized a deep-seated connection to song craft. After taking her GED and leaving high school to pursue a career in music, Perry relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, for a period of time and attracted some attention, eventually signing with the Christian music label Red Hill.Though she released her debut album in 2001, the LP failed to perform well--forcing Perry to reconsider to approach to song writing and singing.Relocating to Los Angeles and working with a number of high profile producers, Perry started to discover a side of herself that she never really knew existed. Writing provocative lyrics and singing them with unbridled enthusiasm, Perry would create a characteristic sound for herself that shone through on her breakout 2008 LP, One of the Boys. Having since gone on to release her massively popular 2010 album, Teenage Dream, in addition to touring the world with her impressive stage show, Perry has gone on to be regarded as one of the more versatile and revered female voices of her generation.
