Outdoor Activities

»Riegrovy Sady

Riegrovy Sady Park is a quick 10 minute walk (or 2 tram stops on the number 11) up the hill (toward the television tower) from Vaclavske Namesti, the National Museum and the main train station. It is the perfect place to watch the sun set behind Prague Castle with a bottle of wine and good company. The park is big enough that you won't hear the sounds of the city once you make your way into its depths. Aside from the spectacular view of the center, this dog-friendly park sports a café, restaurant and a beer garden for all your refreshment needs. - Christophor Rick

»Boat Rental

Next to the National Theatre on Slovanky Island, boats can be rented here for navigating the Moldau River. You have a choice of either a paddle boat or a row boat for half an hour or more. Since the river is dammed for various reasons, the current around the island is not strong and is therefore easy to navigate. The rental rates are reasonable. This is an easy way to escape from rushing around the city for a while.

»Sportcentrum YMCA

After sampling the thick gravies that Czech cuisine is famous for, it may be a good idea to head over to the centrally located YMCA fitness center. This well known organization offers many of the same services one can expect from any other YMCA around the world, including a weightlifting facility, swimming pool, sauna, massage and hair salon. For those who workout during regular business hours, child care is available. Normally, the facilities aren't crowded but it is best to avoid exercising in the evening. To cater to those who do not speak Czech, there usually is one English speaking staff member on duty.

»UltraAnt Climbing Wall (Horolezecká stěna UltraAnt)

The smallest and friendliest of the three climbing walls in Prague. Located a stone's throw from the Tyn Church, it's also the most accessible. Three sides of a small gymnasium (not much bigger than a basketball court) are filled with overhangs which look imposing, but many of the holds when tried are enormous. That said, it's not really a place for beginners; only one wall is not inclined beyond the vertical. Walls hit the ceiling at fifteen meters and it is possible to climb with ropes or solo. Bolts with 'In Situ' extenders abound as do half-metre-thick crash mats. When five parties are climbing with ropes, little room is left for anything but soloing.

»Podolí Swimming Complex (Plavecký stadion Podolí)

A fitness cum recreational landmark for Prague, this space looks and feels like one of the few places about town which has not changed much over the past decade but manages to offer good facilities for keeping fit. The large complex was built in a mid-century functionalist style and features large indoor and outdoor swimming pools, attracting an all-ages crowd all year round. The outdoor pool is flanked by a good weights room, with a space for sunbeds and massage, fitness shops and a huge lawn for taking in the rays during the warmer months. Swimming competitions are held in the space during the warmer months. The inside space includes large changing rooms, an Olympic size pool and a restaurant. Prices are determined by the amount of time spent at the facility and are competitive with other fitness centers around town.
