Boulder's Power Revolution: Keep it Local Starting in the early 2000s, citizens and leaders of the city of Boulder, Colorado began exploring options for significant reductions in the carbon emissions profile of the city electricity supply. Though initially driven by environmental concerns, the studies of options for local control of power production have revealed additional potential benefits in the realms of economic development, resiliency, and democratization of energy policy.  In his talk, Boulder City Council Member Sam Weaver will discuss how municipalization, or a radically re-structured relationship with its private monopoly supplier, would allow the city to meet its Energy Future goals through important drivers like integration of renewable and clean fuel sources, increased local business development, more democratic local control and sustainable competitive rates for customers. The event will be moderated by Peter Byck, director and producer of Carbon Nation and will dedicate a large portion of time for audience questions. You may submit questions during the registration process. Sam Weaver is President, CEO and a co-founder of Cool Energy, Inc., a power conversion equipment company located in Boulder, CO.  Cool Energy develops energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions and is a certified benefit corporation (B-corp).  Sam also sits on the Board of Directors of Proton Power, Inc, a biomass power and fuels company. Prior to his time as an entrepreneur and involvement in start-up businesses, Sam was employed for ten years as a professional researcher in the electrical engineering department at CU-Boulder.  He is a member of the City Council of Boulder and has previously served on the State of Colorado Clean Energy Development Authority, and the Colorado Solar Energy Industries Association.  Sam holds a B.S. from the California Institute of Technology, and is an inventor named on twenty issued U.S. patents.

»Darius Rucker

January 29, 2015 3:30 PM

Darius Rucker is most notably the former lead singer for Hooty and the Blowfish. After this band's successful run in the 90s and early 2000s, Rucker moved on to a solo career, continuing to sing in a similarly soulful and often bittersweet style. Unlike his work with Hooty and the Blowfish, however, much of is solo work is described as country music with common Southern themes and the use of instruments typical of a Nashville act. The South Carolina native grew up in a musically mixed culture that is reflected in his mix of rock, blues and country, explicit in his music.

January 29, 2015 7:30 PM

Known for its competitive improv shows, the National Comedy Theatre's skilled comedy troupe pokes fun at dated and/or campy and/or cult classic films by replacing the soundtrack with off-the-wall live riffs, à la TV's famed "Mystery Science Theater 3000". From cheesy sci-fi effects to melodramatic acting, no filmmaking sin can escape this show's comic justice. As these so-bad-they're-good movies play, the comedians overdub their own dialogue, twisting the characters and dreaming up absurd plots to fit the action on the screen, all while providing their own sound effects and musical scores. At the end of the night, there's even a trivia contest with prizes. Please see the full event description for the upcoming lineup.
