»Steve Byrne

December 21, 2014 7:00 PM

Steve Byrne is an American stand-up comedian from Pittsburgh. After working a job answering phones at a comedy club in college, he eventually found the courage to step behind the mic himself. Early performances in clubs throughout New York City helped him establish a name for himself, as his accessible brand of witty observational humor quickly found a following. Drawing on his Irish and Korean descent, Byrne often works cultural humor and race relations into the self-deprecating tone of his sets. He's appeared on popular television shows such as Chappelle's Show and Jimmy Kimmel Live in addition to being regularly featured on Comedy Central specials.

Fusing grungy guitars, punk-style drumming and 1990s female pop vocals, Buffalo, New York trio Lemuria manages to create its own unique breed of pop punk. Forming in 2004 and taking its moniker from the legendary lost continent of the same name, the band refused to release a full album until it had found and developed its sound, deciding to focus on touring instead for a time. Several lineup changes later, the band signed to Asian Man Records and released its debut full-length in 2008 to positive acclaim. Because of its extensive touring, Lemuria has developed a cult underground following throughout the US and Canada, and is steadily spreading that fan base into Europe and the UK.

»Outside Mullingar

December 21, 2014 3:00 PM

"I don't hate you," says Rosemary to Anthony. "I just don't like you." In John Patrick Shanley's "Outside Mullingar", two neighbors have known each other for years, but their lives intersect sharply when a parent dies and property rights come into question. Ultimately a romantic comedy, Shanley's play about new love in middle age has received rave reviews. Charles Isherwood of "The New York Times" says "Outside Mullingar" is "Shanley's finest work since "Doubt"," which won the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize in 2005 and inspired the 2008 movie (written and directed by Shanley) starring Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams. Shanley's written several other films, including "The January Man, Joe Versus the Volcano", and "Moonstruck", which won him the Oscar for best screenplay.
