Bars & Cafes

»Palm Tavern

The Palm Tavern is another nondescript bar in Milwaukee that merits mass attention. It has a large selection of beers (both imported and domestic) as well as a more than decent selection of some very good scotch, whiskey and bourbon. Try the Tyconnell Single Malt or the overwhelming peat flavored Laphroaig and you'll immediately waft over the Atlantic to Ireland and Scotland, respectively. If you do not know much about the spirit or beer they have to offer, the bartenders are extremely nice and helpful and they can teach you about the drinks without all the pretension or hype.

2989 S Kinnickinnic Ave
Milwaukee, WI 53207

Milwaukee is known for its conglomerate domestic beer companies, most particularly Miller Brewing Company, however the small brewing tradition dies hard in this Midwestern metropolis. Burnhearts in the Bay View district of the city is one such place that reveres local suds. They have more than 25 domestic and imported brews on tap in addition to a better than average cocktail menu. The beers change constantly yet the cocktail list remains steadfast, try the 'Autumn in New York', it is made with a Pumpkin spirit and is a local favorite.

»The Down and Over Pub

Perched on a little hill, what was formerly the Bay View Brew Haus, is The Down and Over Pub. Its easy to miss this massive building as it looks like an old warehouse. Look out for the huge red sign with a black guitar and you will know you have reached the right place. The minimalist decor, high ceilings, wooden tables and stage gives this place a vintage charm. Run by the same team of Up And Under Pub, the bar has no dearth of entertainment. From pool tables, dartboards, to live gigs, karaoke, comedy nights, jam sessions and swing dance, there is always something or the other in this lively place. Some of their previous lists are Filtharmonic, The Vibrators and Doghouse Flowers.

»Goodkind Bay View

Goodkind Bay View has gained critical acclaim as one of the top restaurants in the locality for its farm-to-table philosophy. It has partnered with local farms and artisans such as Compost Crusaders, Pinn Oak Farm, Hometown Sausage Kitchen, Ledgeview Gardens and Underground Meats to source fresh meat and produce. The seasonal ingredients are then used to create dishes with nostalgic American flavors. As the menu changes frequently no two visits here are the same. The dim and classy interiors are ideal for savoring dishes such as Duck Leg Confit with Smokey Spanish Rice and Spice Crusted Scallops with Toasted Cauliflower. The drinks like the Belgian Chimay Première Red and New Glarus Moon Man Pale Ale perfectly complement the food. The name Goodkind came from an old cannery that shut shop in 1940, symbolic of the American culinary tradition that this restaurant preserves.

»Sugar Maple

Sugar Maple is one of the few bars in Bay View that effortlessly blends together the comfort and charm of a neighborhood bar, and the lounge-like style. With an excellent beer selection including over 60 craft beers on tap, Sugar Maple is a relaxed and lively place, with just a hint of whimsy. The staff are friendly and well-informed about their beer, so don't hesitate to ask for suggestions. The ping pong table at the back is another popular attraction, and offers a fun way to make new friends or spend some quality time with old ones. Finding a seat can be a challenge on most days and especially if there is an event scheduled,  so try to come in early if you have your heart set on sitting down.

»Koz's Mini Bowl

Milwaukee is a city filled with cool retro nightlife, from Tiki bars to polka halls, this bar with four mini bowling lanes only adds to the list. The interior of Koz's looks like it is part hunting club, part dive bar, in fact they have a massive lion's head along with its hide perched over a bar cabinet. Despite the kitschy and eclectic decorations, most people come here to bowl. In the back, guests can enjoy their PBR while they roll some mini balls down some tiny lanes and if the place is too crowded, the bar has a pool table and great drinks until the next round becomes available.

»Bryant's Cocktail Lounge

Legend has it that Bryant Sharp, the owner of this beloved Milwaukee institution just stopped selling beer one day and started serving cocktails sometime in the 1930's. Since then, Milwaukee locals as well as tourists who serendipitously stumble in have always enjoyed a stiff Martini or Manhattan at this cool, dark bar. It is also alleged that old man Bryant created the famous drinks, "The Banshee" and the "Pink Squirrel" back in the 1950's. In addition to the lounge below, the upstairs Velvet Lounge is a great spot for groups or to throw events.
