»Southern Cross

As the Melbourne terminus for interstate and country services (as well as suburban lines), Southern Cross Station is often the first port of call for visitors. The building itself is more functional than beautiful, although a major renovation is planned. Lockers, luggage storage, waiting rooms and showers are among the facilities for travelers. The station is at the western end of the city and within walking distance of the Crown Entertainment Complex, Colonial Stadium and several hotels. Outside the terminal building is Melbourne's central bus depot for country, interstate and airport services. Taxi ranks and tram stops are also nearby.

»City Centre

Since its early days, Melbourne City Centre has been a shopping Mecca for residents and visitors alike. This is still the case today despite the advent of the suburban 'megamalls'. In contrast to these somewhat bland establishments, a day's shopping in the city offers the excitement of discovering hidden treasures. As well as the 'everything under one roof' convenience of the major department stores, the city's tiny alleyways and historic arcades contain fascinating little boutiques and specialty stores. An added attraction is the different experience offered by ethnic precincts. The huge shopping and restaurant development is another city drawcard. Variety is the key to the city's myriad of shopping opportunities. There are malls, department stores and specialist retailers. Be it fashion or food, sports gear or souvenirs or anything in between, you will find it here.

»Flinders Street Station

If Wellington's statue in London is a meeting place for Londoners, then Flinders Street train station is Melbourne's equivalent. People of Melbourne meet each other under the clocks to the music of buskers and the constant roar of traffic. Built in 1899 on the site of the city's first fish market, the Victorian station has been well preserved and by night the clocks on the front of the station are bathed in a quite spectacular golden glow. The railway shops sell food to go, magazines and souvenirs. A police station provides security for passengers.
