The first spinning wheel business in Como, run by Pietro Boldoli, dates from 1510. The entrepreneur took the threads, dyed them and sent them on the so-called Silk Road, which went from the lake, to Austria, Bavaria and the Rhine. By 1815, 2000 people in Como, which only had 15,000 inhabitants, worked in the silk industry. The businessmen worked together, and in 1865 the Silk Factory School was set up, which aimed to produce skilled workers and good factory leaders. In Albate, just outside Como, in the direction of Milan, they charge reasonable prices for scarves, ties, shirts and other silk goods.
