Bars & Cafes
Defining this place with a single word is not easy. It is foremost a restaurant, given that the central aspect is the homemade cuisine, with its dishes of the local tradition, as well as ingredients typical of other regions and the unfailing pizza. Since one of the owners is also a sommelier, the taverna is also a wine bar, in fact it offers excellent bottles from the most important producers. Its hours of operation, then, are not suitable for a common restaurant: until the dead of the night, you can listen to jazz music, played live by musicians coming from all over Italy and even the world.
A bar on the main road linking Pegli to Sestri Ponente, an area on the west side of Genoa, near the airport. The pub boasts wooden internal decor in the style of an Irish bar. It is roomy, with an area for reading the comics and magazines put at the clients' disposition. On Tuesday evenings there is a dj playing commercial hits, with film projections, while for the rest of the week it is a place to chat and drink beer. It serves food (sandwiches, crepes, salads) until late.
Dolce Vita is one of the favorite stops for those who do their shopping on Via Sestri, to have a coffee break or a glass of good wine, tasting one of the hundred and more labels on the list. But it is not only a wine bar: every Friday they organize, from 6p on, what they call ‘aperitif in movement,’ with the possibility to sip excellent cocktails, like the house speciality ‘Bellavista,’ while the DJ plays Lounge or Jazz House music. In summer all this happens in the open air, while during the other seasons the guys of the surroundings get together here to watch the matches of their favorite team on the mega-screen.
As soon as Papillon opened in the center of Sestri Ponente, many of the usual customers of the nearest bars redirected themselves toward this new proposal. This is thanks to many winning cards: the first one is that not only is the furniture welcoming, but most of all the staff, made up of local youth with different experiences behind them, which each of them brings in an original and effective way. The second is the attention with which every part of the menu has been selected: fresh pastries to match with an excellent coffee, cocktails based on the Veneto tradition, home region of one of the owners, and the presence of a sommelier in order to avoid mistakes on the choice of wine. The third plus is the background music, which is always pleasant, while the fourth is the open-air veranda facing Via Sestri.
Ostaia Da-U Neo is a wine bar with very traditional dishes. Today, it is not merely a drink stop, but also a point of sale (there are more than 200 labels of beer, but most of all of wine, from those more esteemed to those more economical); moreover the customers are entertained with various sorts of live music, from jazz to blues, or hard rock, usually on Friday nights. Hanging on the walls, there are great pictures from the owner’s travels in the USA, giving character to a an already rustic interior, which suits the spirit of this place very well. There is also a functioning record player, so anyone can use it to play their old vinyl records.
Here is a good place to stop for a break after shopping, the reason why even those who do not live in this district loves going for a walk on Via Sestri – not central but full of life. Otello Cafè offers an elegant ambiance and an intimate atmosphere, a shelter from the crowds of the street outside, and a refined service, so much so that together with the coffee they also serve you some whipped cream, or panna, included in the price. Also, the cocktails deserve a mention, since they are many and very original: you can call them ‘trendy cocktails,’ as the blackboard at the entrance proclaims, but don't think they can become part of your dinner because the appetizers are not the specialty here.
This old cinema has been renovated and is now a concert venue and a disco. The loft-like structure has high ceilings and a large, elevated stage with gangways looking onto the dance floor. The place is dominated by electric blue walls, bright red velvet sofas, and a bronze bar. The hi-tech glass and steel staircase that leads to the upper floor is particularly distinctive and gives the place an avant-garde look. Foreign DJs from all over Europe come here to play the most up to date sounds, including break beat, new jazz beat, drum and bass, and Asia underground. This is a trendy place with a metropolitan style that is unique in Genoa.
If it were not for the modern and refined furniture at Bicu, you would think you were in Germany: the copper tubes and cylinders used to produce at least five different types of beer are very visible. There is no lack of hubbub, even though the main drink is alcoholic, because this restaurant is very popular among families with children. It seems that the typical brewery cuisine perfectly suits the preferences of the young ones. The surroundings, it being located in the Old Port (Porto Antico), make it the ideal place for a pleasant break at any time of the day: lunch, aperitif or dinner as well. You can even ask for a free fidelity card to get discounts on parking, as well as points towards Bicu-brand gadgets.
You need not suffer from sea-sickness in order to enjoy the unique atmosphere of this locale, becasue you will find yourself seated upon a floating platform, moored in the old port of Genova! Rosa dei Venti is not a common American bar in many aspects; one only needs to check out its rich and varied amenities: admittance to the adjacent swimming pool, cabaret, live music, fresh fruit aperitifs spiced up by a DJ, and the possibility to organize parties and business meetings. If you are hungry, you can not miss the lunch of fresh mega-salads, while for the evening you will have to remember to make a reservation, in order to be counted among the lucky few to enjoy a wonderful dinner watching the lights of the port reflecting on the sea, right under your feet!
This Spanish style pub is inside the Magazzini del Cotone, in the Porto Antico area. It offers Iberian food and drink, and, although the quality is not especially high, this is the right place to come to if you want a lively evening. Furnished in a 'Hemingway' style, with old photos on the walls, wooden floors, warm colours and kitsch ornaments, this is a lovely place, and the columns of the old Magazzini can be seen from here. On more crowded evenings the tables are pushed back and customers take part in the 'fiesta', with live music and dancing on the tables.
Among the three 'Tre Merli' establishments in Genoa this one is the closest in spirit to the New York establishment of the same name. Its location in the Porto Antico area with its many tourists has meant that the place itself has had to be large, but despite its dimensions, it has managed to retain an elegant, sought-after atmosphere. There is a spacious loft, its yellow walls entirely lined with wine racks, that is characterized by the presence of a wood stove that churns out Genovese specialties; such as cheese focaccia that you can enjoy at the marble bar, sipping a wine chosen from the extensive list. Alternatively you might opt for a main meal at lunch or dinner time.
The Economics Faculty is based at ‘Darsena' quarter, which led to the opening of this pub designed for students and therefore it is open all day. The building's architectural originality is based on the contrast between the old stone structures on view and the modern, techno furnishings: glass and metal confer a futuristic aspect on the room while blending in with the pub's historic location. Il Refettorio pub is difficult to find, but worth it if you're hoping to catch a glimpse of the old port area in its last few days. Open on Saturday and Sunday by appointment only.
