The Vasco da Gama Bridge runs from Lisbon's Parque de Naçoes east to Alcochete over the Tagus River. The Vasco da Gama Bridge's main claim to fame is the fact that it is the longest bridge in Europe, at just slightly over 17 kilometers (10.7 miles). This suspension bridge was opened in 1998 for the Expo '98 and the 500th anniversary of Vasco da Gama's discovery of the route from Europe to India.
