»Biagio Antonacci

April 14, 2015 9:00 PM

Biagio Antonacci is a singer-songwriter from Milan who first came to notice after participating in the Sanremo Music Festival in 1988. One year after his performance he dropped his debut album, Sono cose che capitano, and his eponymous follow-up in 1991, but earned little attention for either record. With his back against a wall, Antonacci pushed his pop music stylings for his third album, Liberatemi and finally saw positive reactions from Italian critics and audiences. Though he never broke into the mainstream music circuits in the western world, Antonacci reached international audiences with his 2004 album, Convivendo: Part I as well as his subsequent record, 2005's Vonvivendo: Part II.

»Madama Butterfly

April 27, 2015 8:45 PM

Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly debuted in Milan in 1904 to lukewarm reception, however it has since become one of the most renowned operas of all-time. U.S. naval officer B.F. Pinkerton secures a Japanese bride, Cio-Cio San, during his tour in Nagasaki. Pinkerton regards his newly acquired geisha and home merely as pieces of a romantic chapter in his roaming, adventurous youth. Cio-Cio San, or Madama Butterfly, believes unwaveringly that she has found a husband for life, renouncing her Buddhist faith, angering her family, and devoting herself to a new life with her American husband. Time passes, and three years later Cio-Cio San is alone in their home, longingly waiting for Pinkerton's return. Despite advice to the contrary, she prepares to bear his child, confident that he is faithful to her. After their son's birth, Pinkerton finally does arrive, however, he brings along with him his newly-wed American bride. The devastated Cio-Cio San, unable to bear the news, takes her own life, preferring death to a life of shame.

»Carmen

April 30, 2015 8:30 PM

This French-language opera by Georges Bizet broke with the traditional division between serious and comic operas, introducing a realistic approach to the subject matter. The title character, Carmen, is a boisterous and sensual gypsy girl, who catches the eye of a corporal, Don Jose, in the cigarette factory where she works. They fall in love and she seduces him to abandon his life in the military to come dwell with her and other smugglers in a hideaway in the mountains. Their love suffers, fading under the strain of hiding, and when Don Jose discovers that his mother is ill, he leaves, promising Carmen that they will meet again. In the final act, Carmen has a new lover, a victorious bullfighter, and Jose returns to win her love. But she is unmovable, proclaiming that she will live her life with the freedom she craves. Jose cannot bear it and kills her in front of the crowd. This tragicomic ode to love and its wild, charismatic heroine have won its place in the hearts and imaginations of opera-goers and artists since its premiere in 1875, and will continue as it is performed around the world for generations to come.
