    Piazza Matteo da Lecce

    Piazza Matteo da Lecce
    Lecce, 73100
The visitor is always most struck by the view of the Church of Santa Croce which emerges from behind the wings of the three palaces that surround it. The square is the site of the monument dedicated to Sigismondo Castromediano: the plinth below contains a statue of Liberty, and an eagle on the coat of arms of Castromediano (1811-95). The bronze statue of the patriot presents his book of memories of prison to the passersby. The statue was the work of Antonio Bortone in 1905. Behind the statue lies Piazza Gabriele Riccardi in which, at number 13, there stands the Palazzo of Anna-Petrarolo, perhaps designed by Manieri in the 18th Century.
