Castello Carlo V
Viale XXV Luglio
The castle was built in 1573 by Carlo V around the preexistent medieval castle constructed by Riccardo Normanno, the count of Lecce. So it is a mixture of two different periods: the internal keep is from Norman times while the external walls are from the period of Carlo V. After the building was completed it was isolated by a moat and four walls connected by bastions were built around the medieval core. There are two ways of getting to the castle, either through the Piazza Carlo V or through Piazzale delle Poste. The castle is often used as a space for exhibitions sponsored by the Comune di Lecce.
