Arvika is situated on a branch of the glafsfjorden, Sweden's only inland fjord. It is therefore a hub of outdoor activities in the nation, and in summer is a popular destination for hiking, camping, kayaking and climbing. The town itself was just a village until its incorporation in the 19th Century. Since then it has seen that status fluctuate with rising and falling population, but nowadays is a major center in the area. The town is perhaps best known for its music festival called, appropriately enough, the Arvika festival. Held every July, it's one of the largest music festivals in Scandinavia, and if the festival goers were counted among the town's population (most attendees camp out near the festival grounds), it would nearly triple the town's number of inhabitants at a stroke.
