    »Average White Band

    October 24, 2014 8:00 PM

Hailing from Dundee, Scotland Average White Band is a six-piece outfit that has collected a dedicated following with its funky brand of soul. Formed in the early 1970s, the band harnessed a distinctive, blue-eyed soul sound powered by Memphis, Detroit and Philadelphia funk from the 1960s. After playing a breakthrough set in support of Eric Clapton in 1973, Average White Band relocated to New York and signed to Atlantic Records, who released its debut album, Show Your Hand. The group went on to enjoy a successful decade in the the US, releasing its most renowned tune, “Pick Up The Pieces” in 1975 as the lead single off of its sophomore LP,AWB, before breaking up in 1982. With a rejuvenated lineup, the band reunited in 1989 and has since continued to perform and release music.

    »Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn

    October 25, 2014 8:00 PM

Abigail Washburn is a claw hammer banjo player from Illinois--claw hammer is the term used to describe banjo players who use a down-picking motion to play instead of the standard way of rolling the fingers up along the strings. Song of the Travelling Daughter, her 2005 debut, was produced by Bela Fleck, who she later formed the band Sparrow Quartet with. Her smoky voice lends itself well to her folk songs, especially when she holds out her delicate legato notes, allowing the listener to hear the voice fade into a whisper.

    »Boz Scaggs

    October 25, 2014 8:00 PM

Boz Scaggs transitioned from singing rocking blues music with longtime friend Steve Miller to performing what radio would call "middle of the road" music. He released his first album Boz in 1965 but didn't make any noise on the charts until his 1976 release Silk Degrees, recorded with a backing band that would later go on to its own success as Toto. Scaggs took a break from the music industry altogether for a little while in the 1980s and since his return primarily sticks to performing his old hits and classic jazz standards.
