Southern California-based indie folk outfit Avi Buffalo (a spin on the name of chief songwriter, Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg) had the fortunate pleasure of signing with Sub Pop Records when its members were just barely out of high school. It's not difficult to see what the popular label saw in the band, however, as the Long Beach duo creates sparkling folk tunes that can hold up with the best of its contemporaries. Comparisons to the acoustic-based indie rock of groups such as The Shins and The Fruit Bats are practically inevitable, but Avi Buffalo brings enough to the table to avoid claims of complete derivation. Zahner-Isenberg is a creative songwriter whose hooks are catchy but rarely glaringly obvious or heavy-handed, which, coupled with the high-pitched, unique timbre of his voice, adds up to a strong combination of charm and fun, breezy pop.

Part of the original British new wave movement, Elvis Costello is a renowned singer/songwriter and guitarist from London. After achieving moderate success in London's pub rock scene in the early 1970s, Costello shifted into the punk and new wave scene with his 1977 debut album, My Aim Is True. As his sound continued to develop with elements of soul, country, classical and pop music, Costello eventually found his signature style that would go on to make him one of the more recognizable acts to emerge out of England in the 1980s. From his 1979 album Armed Forces, to 2002's When I Was Cruel, Costello has been praised for his sharp songwriting skills and lyrically complex music that has been dubbed "encyclopedia pop."

Possibly best known for being part of the delightful soundtrack to the French romantic-comedy Amelie, Yann Tiersen is a musician who makes music that isn't what most people would expect to hear from a modern song-smith. But Tiersen was classically trained and his love of unusual instruments like the melodica, xylophone, toy piano, and harpsichord has helped him compose unique avant-garde songs that have a defined minimalist quality. The musician rose to prominence in the mid-'90s with a string of releases that highlighted Tiersen's instrumental prowess and his knack for experimental compositions.

Black Stone Cherry is a rock band from Edmonton, KY that was formed in 2001 by lead vocalist/guitarist Chris Robertson, lead guitarist Bed Wells, bassist John Lawhon and drummer John Fred Young. Young connected the band with the same practice space used by his father's band, the Kentucky Headhunters, known as the Practice House where Black Stone Cherry began to record its hard rock/metal music. When the band returned to Edmonton, approximately 1500 people showed up to its homecoming show at the local junior high, sparking interest in the band's up coming release. The band released its self-titled debut album in 2006 and embarked on a tour of Europe soon after. In 2009, the band released its second studio album, Folklore and Superstition, before joining Nickelback on tour its Dark Horse tour. Black Stone Cherry released its third album, Between the Devil and the Deep blue Sea, in 2011.
