Although the English group Anathema helped pioneer the death/doom movement, the band has since transcended heavy metal in favor of alternative rock. The band has been making music together since 1990 and the group's drastic shift in sonic pace took place after a line up change in the late '90s altered the way the group wrote songs and performed.

    »The Knife

    November 01, 2014 9:00 PM

Electro duo The Knife is one of the more artistically respected bands to emerge from Sweden in recent memory. Founded in 1999, the band's synths and industrial beats occasionally overpower the vocal stylings of Karin Dreijer Andersson, but the contrasts seem to heighten the overall tonal quality of the music. The music's epic sound coupled with its oftentimes gothic-themed live performances complete with costumes that often obscure the musicians' faces.

Known as Turboneger in its native state of Norway, the punk rock band Turbonegro combines glam punk and hard rock music. Formed in 1989, the band released five albums starting with 1992 release Hot Cars and Spent Contraceptives, before breaking up in 1998. Having released the supposed first installment of a supposed three-part Apocalypse trilogy, titled Apocalypse Dudes, prior to disbanding, Turbonegro built its fan base while on hiatus with simple anticipation. The band learned of the growing interest in its music and signed a two-album deal with Burning Heart Records to finish its trilogy. Scandinavian Leather was released in 2003 followed by Party Animals in 2005, but Turbonegro kept recording and touring internationally despite completing its promised collection of albums as well as the departure of its long-time lead vocalist Hank von Helvete in 2010.
