Murveln is slang for "Journalist"; at one time this place may have been teeming with them, but it certainly is not today. The clientele are a varied bunch, most of whom come for a drink and perhaps some food. In the daytime they can be tired shoppers dropping by for an afternoon beer; in the evenings anyone will show up. This is because Murveln is in the middle of Nordstan, by daylight a large shopping mall, but at night a shelter from the cold or a shortcut to the railway station. Many come for the different casino and lottery games. Murveln offers cheap lunches, and a special of the week is available. The food is typically Swedish, while beer and spirits are the main items.
Gretas Bar & Kök is a superb weekend option for the fun seeking and the adventurous. There seem to be plenty of the fun loving crowd here and the place tends to get pretty crowded, which is generally a really good sign of popularity. With two dance floors and two full bars and the regular pub fare one is really spoiled for choice. Meet plenty of interesting people or just hang out here with a group of friends and have a great night out on the town. Plenty of events, parties and gigs, keep the entertainment quotient soaring. Make sure you have reservations for your favorite table on weekends.
This friendly gay bar and nightclub is one of the oldest and largest in Gothenburg, so it's known for its fun crowds and amazing parties. With two dance floors, the DJs spin a mix of 70s and 80s music on one floor and contemporary jams on the other. Occasionally, live acts perform on the stage. All are welcome, so come out for a night of dancing!
Located in the Market Hall is Bee Kök & Bar, part restaurant, part nightclub. Here you'll find classic and comforting meals for lunch and dinner like the shrimp sandwich, Caesar salad and burger. On Fridays and Saturdays at 10p the restaurant turns into a nightclub with bumping music and great drinks flowing all night. Just be aware that the club is for people 20 years old and over.
Bee Bar has friendly and reasonably fast service. You can enjoy a nice time with your friends while trying one of their drinks. Bee Bar is predominantly a lesbian, gay, transgender hangout, but they are very "straight friendly" as well. In addition to their extensive drink menu, they have a surprising large food menu with full appetizers, entrees, and desserts.
Step into The Flying Scotsman for a quick afternoon snack or to party into the wee hours within the dimly-lit interiors. Strong, native whiskeys add a touch of class to equally competent, local dishes like Helstekt fläskfilé (pork chili with potatoes in sauce) and Majskyckling filé (bacon fried chicken with potatoes in a thick mayo sauce). A few international dishes like pasta, burgers and jambalaya put in a feeble appearance on the menu as well. Crème brüleé is the ideal dessert if you want to stick with the tried-and-tested; for the more adventurous, the house specialty chocolate truffles and the sinfully-rich Tartufo al Limoncello are worth a dig. Once you've quelled your appetite, it's time to twirl your date on the dance floor in the company of other party animals. Enjoy!
As you probably guessed from the name of this establishment, it offers more than just one option to visitors. Lounge(s) is one of the most happening nightspots in the city, and not without good reason. Posh and upscale, it boasts of four distinct areas, each decorated in a fashion suitable to its name. "Mustique" is all about colorful cocktails and a good time, "Pimp" sports beaded curtains and a bling-bling vibe, and the lounge itself is where you can just collapse into comfy sofas and unwind with friends. The in-house casino provides a welcome change if you're tired of the bar-scene.
Newly renovated, Nivå has a modern, fresh look. It gets loud and crowded on weekends, though the music is low until 11p. On Wednesday nights popular club Soul Train takes over, with DJs in costume. The kitchen offers ordinary Swedish dishes and pasta. Most come here for drinks, and during happy hours beer costs real cheap and free snacks abound. Permitted ages at Nivå are 20 years and above on Wednesdays, and 25 years of age and above on Fridays and Saturdays. Check website, or call number provided for further details.

Genuine Australian bar and restaurant owned by an Australian, Dancin' Dingo, in a basement not far from Avenyn, is most popular for the inexpensive beer. The lines outside are long on weekend nights, and there is a definite risk of a loud and rowdy crowd. Every once in a while, there is a live cover band to entertain the bar guests. The food is typically Australian, with large steaks and burgers with names like Bondi Beach Burger and Outback Sirloin Steak. The actual restaurant is quite cozy, with several different rooms and a simple décor.
When you walk into the Excet and see the three dance floors and eight bars, you'd never believe it used to be a small restaurant. Now, Excet is the place to dance to R&B and Swedish techno. On warm summer nights, you can dance on the rooftop by stepping out to the terrace. If you're in the mood to start early, on Friday the club opens at 7p for mingling before dancing and serves snacks at the bar, creating a cozy, bistro atmosphere. College students, be aware that the this club is only for those 22 and older.
Valand is something of an institution in Gothenburg nightlife. The large white building is situated in the crossing of Avenyn and Vasagatan, a hub for buses, trams, cars, pedestrians and cyclists. Valand is divided into a restaurant area and a nightclub area, with four bars, one rock bar and two dance floors where different DJs play a variety of music.
