Bars & Cafes
If you want to experience nature while having your coffee, you have two main options in Gothenburg; Rosenkaféet and the café at the Botanical Gardens. Rosenkaféet is situated at Trädgårdsföreningen, the only fenced-in park in the city. The location is wonderful for coffee in the springtime, with lots of flowers and the park's rose garden close by. Or come here for a break on a warm summer's day.
At Steinbrenner & Nyberg you can enjoy a regular sandwich or salad for lunch, but what you really want is their famous soup and dessert bar. For one fairly low price, you get the soup of the day, bread, coffee and complete access to the dessert bar, which features a wide variety of beautiful, delicious cakes. The atmosphere here is also fun and lively, so it's a great spot even if you just want to a latte or other coffee drink.
Coffee and a slice of pie are what patrons mainly come here for, though the place is humming with activity at any given time of the day. The daily menu at Fröken Olssons Kafé usually features salads and baguette sandwiches stuffed with shrimp or ham and made in a traditional Swedish fashion, to be washed down with a mug of refreshing lager. Make sure you grab a table on the terrace in summer, and ask for a bowl of their piping hot homemade soup, followed by the main course. One of the huge, delicious meringues on a silver tray should wrap up the meal very well indeed!
Kafé Vanilj is a spacious and unpretentious cafe at Kyrkogatan, right in the city center. It is large with light colored wood furnishings. Vanilj's fruit pies are good, and they stay open late, even on Sundays. To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen.
Mauritz Kaffe is one of the cafés in downtown Gothenburg that specialize in coffee. According to many this is where you'll get the best cup in town. The interior is simple but attractive, and the staff can answer any and all questions about coffee.
Murveln is slang for "Journalist"; at one time this place may have been teeming with them, but it certainly is not today. The clientele are a varied bunch, most of whom come for a drink and perhaps some food. In the daytime they can be tired shoppers dropping by for an afternoon beer; in the evenings anyone will show up. This is because Murveln is in the middle of Nordstan, by daylight a large shopping mall, but at night a shelter from the cold or a shortcut to the railway station. Many come for the different casino and lottery games. Murveln offers cheap lunches, and a special of the week is available. The food is typically Swedish, while beer and spirits are the main items.
Brasserie Ferdinand has been voted Beer Restaurant of the Year, and beer probably is the main item of interest here. There are 132 different brands of beer, most of them bottled. But Brasserie Ferdinand also has a varied menu, with both meat and fish dishes. There is always a vegetarian main course and every weekday they serve a different special of the day. There is also a bar menu with slightly cheaper dishes, such as seafood soup or chili with nachos and trimmings. For those interested in organizing some fun for a group of people, there are beer-tasting nights which are only available by booking. These include the history of beer and the information on how beer is distilled, among other things. The nearest tram stop is Brunnsparken, where all trams stop.
Paul's Billiard is a nice little pool hall that also has a small games arcade, restaurant and bar. It is very centrally located just off Kungsportsplatsen. There are two floors of pool tables, with five tables upstairs and six downstairs, as well as a snooker table. The hall has generous happy hour offers, which include games. You can also become a member and get the special members' rate. There are also various TV and computer games. The staff at Paul's are very friendly and the music is good, ranging from 1950s classics to the latest hits, with an emphasis on '60s to '80s classics. The customers are mainly in their twenties and thirties, but older guests enjoy themselves here as well. Apart from games and pool, you can eat or have a drink, either in the bar or at a table. Grilled snacks are available as well. Paul's is a nice place to start a night out.
Bar Centro is originally a popular noodle restaurant at Vasagatan. Now the same owners have opened an espresso bar downtown. The place is small and bright, has a green glass counter and is probably the trendiest café in Gothenburg at the moment. In spite of that, it is quite nice with good coffee. There are also sandwiches for those who are hungry, but no hot meals. To get here, take trams 3, 4, 5, 6 or 8 to Kungsportsplatsen.
An American sports bar with 30 TVs and three giant screens, O'Learys attracts the true sports fans, offering a typical American menu. The chain has branches in many Swedish towns but the one in Gothenburg was the first. The two-story restaurant has several bars and although the main attractions here are beer and sports, it is possible to have a really good meal. The large selection goes from Chicken Thai to chicken wings, covering everything in between. The décor has sports paraphernalia and red-and-white checkered tablecloths. The personnel is service-minded, dropping by every few minutes to check that everything is satisfactory.
If you're looking for a bite to eat or a drink, Café Grindstugan is the place for you. Try the fish stew, burgers or pancakes or one of the variety of sandwiches. You can also enjoy fine coffee and pastries like donuts and chocolate balls, and all why using the free WiFi. On Fridays and Saturdays, there are usually regular live music events.
With several branches in both Sweden and Finland, the Dubliner has become a popular hangout. It offers the perfect combination for a great evening: loads of beer and great music. Make sure you get here early when the live acts are held, because that's when it's packed to the brim. On Sundays and Mondays, the upstairs venue is available for private functions. Call for event timings and additional information.
