On the other hand, those who favor the idea of originality, and swear by the thought that everyone can be deemed artistic in their own way, don't need to find additional reasons to find Sugar City delightfully sweet. Billed as Buffalo's premier alternative theater, the New Phoenix, which first opened its doors in 1996, offers both interpretations of classic productions, as well as new and innovative contemporary productions. Located in an 1885 building in Buffalo's Johnson Park neighborhood, it was once home to Ebenezer Johnson, Buffalo's first mayor. The building had fallen into disrepair and figuratively rose from the ashes—like the legendary phoenix—when it was renovated by the theater company. Richard Lambert is the Executive Director and Robert Waterhouse the Artistic Director. - Christine A. Smyczynski
