    »Gypsy Parlor

The name conjures the right picture. Gypsy Parlor is a nonconformist gastropub in the West Side and is very popular among the locals. There is no dearth of live entertainment here. From belly dance, jazz, Buffalo B movie series, DJ acts and live music, you will be entertained all through the week. The international cuisine with hints of local flavor is a hit among its patrons. Complement your meal with a draft beer, wine or cocktail specials. Coffee lovers will love the Italian cuppa served here. The hippie look of the bar adds to the charm of this place.

    »Essex Pub

At first glance, it seems as if almost every hip place in Buffalo is housed in a building that dates back to last century. This space has history galore, its various incarnations were once mob hangout, diner, brewery and deli until it opened up as a pub in 1986. On the menu diners will find 'sammiches' and 'snackatizers' like wings, Reubens, beef on weck, etc. in addition to much more. Inside guests will find a pool table, jukebox and usually local favorite Flying Bison on tap. Overall a great place to start or finish the night.

    »Sportsmen's Tavern

If you are in the 'Queen City of the Great Lakes' and looking for a place where the drinks are cheap and the music diverse, then head straight for the Sportmen's Tavern. This place presents some excellent live acoustic, alternative, country, rock, and even punk music performances. The artists come-and-go every night, in fact it has more shows than there are days of the month! For nearly three decades, proprietors Dwayne and Denise Hall have created an intimate place for hundreds of artists to try and hone their sound in front of enthusiastic locals as well as out-of-towners. It is no wonder that Sportsmen's is considered to be one of the best places to hear live music in the entire Western New York region.

    »Allen Street Hardware Store Cafe

This restaurant was once a hardware store and now it has been converted into a well-managed, neighborhood spot that serves American comfort food with a twist. On the menu diners will find sandwiches, burgers, panini and salads, however these are definitely not your mother's homemade meals. For instance, the meatloaf here is inside a panini filled with pesto, Swiss and tomato or the burger made with lamb and served with a schmear of mint pesto. There are other standard choices as well, so don't fret, not everything is so eclectic. On Monday nights, check out their 'Backroom', where guests can hear live jazz, acoustic, open-mic, etc. after dinner.

    »Two-Two-Three Allen

Although this bar/restaurant acquired its present name quite recently, most people still know it as "The Old Pink" from its days as The Pink Flamingo. Whatever you call it, the regulars have no doubt that this Allentown dive is the best one in the city—bar none. It's dim and dark, and it attracts everyone from hard-core bikers to college students and artists, as well as some local characters. Aside from its eclectic reputation, it also has the best 'beef on weck' sandwich in the city.

    »Elmwood Lounge

An old-style lounge, complete with the flickering neon sign, this Elmwood Avenue bar is where lounge lizards gather for 50s-style entertainment as performed by Lance Diamond and his 24-Karat Diamond Band. The show combines the right amount of sleaze and tease to make the drinks flow smoothly. This pro has been at it for over 25 years. Friday is fish-fry night. Otherwise, the food is pub-grub all the way. The lounge is the unofficial headquarters for fans of the GooGoo Dolls, with whom Lance performed in the early days.

    »Chocolate Bar

While this upscale yet casual downtown eatery has all sorts of lunch and dinner entrees to choose from, the reason you come here is for the chocolate. First, the entrees offer salads like Greek pasta salad, Buffalo cobb salad or Thai chicken salad, or perhaps try a sandwich like turkey Florentine, peanut butter, honey and banana or Buffalo chicken. Then there's desserts, with specialties like molten lava cake, frozen hot chocolate and more, including homemade ice cream with flavors like Belgian hot fudge, sinnamon (sinfully delicious cinnamon?), and "peanut butter panic". They also serve over 2 dozen different martinis. - Christine A. Smyczynski
