This 120,000-square-foot facility on the campus of the State University of New York at Fredonia was named after the late Michael C. Rockefeller, youngest son of Nelson Rockefeller and grandson of Abby Rockefeller, founder of New York City's Museum of Modern Art. Designed and built in 1969 by the architecture firm of I. M. Pei, the facility includes the 1,200-seat King Concert Hall, 400-seat Marvel Theatre, and 200-seat Bartlett Theatre. Over 170 events take place each year, including national talent, as well as students in the school's arts program. The building houses the college's Department of Visual Arts and New Media, the Department of Theater Arts and Dance, classrooms, rehearsal halls, and art studios. - Christine A. Smyczynski
This former village hall was designed in 1891 by well-known regional architect Enoch Curtis in what he termed Queen Anne eclectic style. Most village halls from that era contained a performance space, or opera house, and this was no exception. The Fredonia Opera House attracted many of the best late 19th-century and early 20th-century entertainers. In the 1920s, it was converted to a movie house. However, by the 1980s, it had closed and fallen in disrepair and was facing demolition. Fortunately, the Fredonia Preservation Society stepped in and saved it from the wrecker's ball. It was restored to its former grandeur and now is a venue for family-oriented entertainment, including concerts, films, plays and professional theater. - Christine A. Smyczynski
