Avery Sunshine is an R&B singer/songwriter and pianist who emerged out of Chester, Pennsylvania. After honing her soulful voice in church choirs as a child, she went on to work with various other artists before releasing her eponymous debut LP in 2010. Harnessing a jazzy, soul sound with unexpected hip-hop elements and classical flourishes, Sunshine continues to offer her own accessible brand of music.

»Lewis Black

Lewis Black is a stand-up comedian from Silver Spring, MD who, aside from his stand-up comedy shows, is perhaps best known for his irreverant commentary segment on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart entitled "Back in Black." Black's trademark, disgruntled-to-the-verge-of-insanity comic style made him one of Comedy Central's biggest talents since he premiered his own special on the network in 1998. Since then, Black has continued his thoroughly successful career with the network, as well as his career in stand-up, which produced a Grammy Award winning comedy album of his groundbreaking Carnegie Hall performance in 2007.

This opening session brings to light some of the struggles we have in seeing, addressing, and entering into those uncomfortable places so we can share the hope that comes from Christs redemptive healing. God-Centered Understanding of Abuse Each of us has been created in Gods image. This presentation discusses the types of abuse and how they wound us and distort our original design. Community-Based Model A brief overview of the MTS community based model, curriculum development, and the process in which the Lord uses this combination to heal brokenness from abuse. Four Primary Effects of Abuse This session will address and define trauma as well as the effects of abuse: shame, powerless, deadness, and isolation. It will also include connecting exercises and group discussion. Relational Safety Creating safety within relationship is the number one dynamic in healing. This session will address being a safe person, facilitator or mentor, and what is looks like to be in safe community. Nuts and Bolts of MTS Groups Knowing and understanding the guidelines for best practice are an important part of MTS groups. In this session we discuss those guidelines and why they are in place. Defenses of the Heart In defense of pain, we develop strategies of protection. This session will address seeking to know those strategies within ourselves as well as recognizing them in others. This session will also include some small group practice and discussion time.   Don Esham Don grew up in a non-Christian home. He has a Bachelor of Science in Public Management from the University of Arizona and a Master of Arts in Biblical Leadership from Phoenix Seminary. Currently, Don is a Leadership Coach and Consultant specializing in developing strong team leadership and cohesive teams. He is a Certified Trainer and facilitator for Mending the Soul, an abuse recovery program. He has facilitated ten Mending the Soul groups for men. Nora Poling Since a young child, Nora has had a passion and love for God and His Word, and a compassion for people - especially for helping those hurting. For years, Nora had been praying for an avenue to minister in her church to women who had been abused. God gave her a tangible answer to that prayer by using her own healing and the resources offered through Mending the Soul to reach many women. After participating in a MTS small support group, Nora wanted to help others find the same hope and healing in Jesus that she had found. She began facilitating Mending the Soul groups for women in 2008. Nora has been teaching and training on abuse and healing both domestically and internationally for over 5 years. In 2014, as a Mending the Soul Ambassador, she shared her story of healing to teach about hope and healing through Christ as part of the MTS team in East Africa, Mexico, and Honduras.
