    »STS9 Sound Tribe Sector Nine

    October 29, 2014 7:00 PM

Known simply as STS9, Sound Tribe Sector 9 has risen out of Atlanta, Georgia as one of the most renowned livetronica bands in the world since its formation in the late 1990s. Adjoining jam band rock, layers of keyboards, digitized sounds and elements pulled from funk, jazz, hip-hop and various electronic dance music genres, the band is a staple on the touring and festival circuit and has helped paved the way for so many of its opening acts including Snoop Dog, Bassnectar and Pretty Lights. Though largely considered electronic music, STS9 primarily uses instruments to create its music, relying on the virtuosic abilities of its members to take electronic music to new heights with jam band sensibilities. However, the band forgoes the heavy focus on solos found in traditional jam band music and subscribes more to a groove-based mentality, combining tight rhythms with swaths of electronic textures.

A popular live entity, the band performs with a sound and stage presence that recalls some of the classic rock that came out of the 1970s. Swirling guitar solos, a touch of country twang and shifty song directions make the always up-tempo five-piece a solid contribution to the jam rock community. Following the success of its debut album, Moon Taxi released a live album in 2011, sprinkled with unreleased tracks and entitled Live Ride.

    »Ray Lamontagne

    October 31, 2014

Before Ray LaMontagne became a fairly recognizable figure on the adult soft rock scene, he worked in a shoe factory. The life of a mechanized cobbler was a hard one and LaMontagne worked 65 hour weeks quite frequently. One day, after being awakened by a Steven Stills tune, LaMontagne decided to quit his job at the shoe factory and pursue a life as a singer/songwriter. Though this was a mighty ambition to follow, LaMontagne saw it through and after handing a 10 song demo to a record executive, he was awarded a recording contract. His debut album resonated well with a slightly older crowd and even though LaMontagne's songs are mocked by most younger audiences, he's still able to tour and fill up the music halls in which he plays.
