Open since 1961, the Maletta is a huge and popular building that is steeped in the political history of the city and the country. Most of it is taken up by residential apartments, but the first two floors concentrate a wide range of shops and services to cater for a varied audience. There are bookshops, bars, restaurants, hairdressers, clothes shops, among others. Cantina do Lucas is one of the most traditional bars in town, and an old hangout for musicians, students and left-wing politicians. Shazam is a fantastic second-hand bookshop, officially listed as part of the city’s cultural heritage. Satisfeita, Yolanda? is your best bet for funky clothes for men and women.

»Cafe Nice

Cafe Nice has been open since 1939 in downtown Belo Horizonte, and it has played an important part in local and national history and politics. A popular hangout for politicians, journalists, football players and fans, as the photos on the walls testify. Locals are incredibly proud of this tiny shop, to the point of saying that going to Belo Horizonte and not paying a visit to Cafe Nice is an offense! There are many yummy snack options on the food menu, as well as a variety of hot and cold drinks. You can't go wrong with the most traditional combo of all: a cup of brewed coffee with paes de queijo (small cheesy buns), Minas Gerais' most famous baked goods.

»Cafe 3 Corações

Minas Gerais is quite famous for its coffee. The brand 3 Corações has existed since 1922 and is a Brazilian favorite. The brand is named after the city of Três Corações, 287 kilometers away from Belo Horizonte. The city is known for its coffee industry and also for being the birthplace of soccer giant Pelé. Although Três Corações is a bit far away, you can still try their coffee at Café 3 Corações in Belo Horizonte. Located in the stylish Savassi area, the coffeehouse offers over thirty options of the drink in its hot and cold varieties. The food menu is also full of temptations, with special features like steak with jabuticaba (a Brazilian type of berry) sauce.

»Sao Domingos Ice Cream

Oldest ice cream parlor in Belo Horizonte, Sao Domingos has been operating since 1929. The colorful façade decorated with mosaic stones depicting tropical fruit and the old-fashioned park benches outside add to the traditional atmosphere of the shop. They offer a wide range of options of over 270 ice cream flavors, including unusual ones like basil and sweetcorn. Highlights are the Brazilian fruit flavors, such as graviola, seriguela, jaca and cupuaçu. Most of the fruit used in the ice cream is organically grown at their own farm, which results in yummy taste and creamy texture.

»Churrasquinhos do Luizinho

Individual portions of roasted meat served on small wooden skewers is a very common Brazilian tradition, easily found around the streets of the main cities and particularly in the vicinity of soccer stadiums. These skewers are known in Portuguese as churrasquinhos or espetinhos. Churrasquinhos do Luizinho is one of Belo Horizonte's favorite spots for consuming this delicacy. A tin-roofed shed in the Prado neighborhood, it has become widely popular with the locals who fill up the place every night of the week. There are 17 options to choose from, with usual orders including beef, chicken and pork. On Fridays you can also get shrimp and quail. The cheese and pineapple skewer is a good option to round it off.

»Berga 8

Berga 8 successfully blends the simplicity of bar food and live music with the charm of a restaurant, creating a space that works well for business meetings, a family dinner or just catching up with friends. With TV screens spread around the bar, it is a very good place to watch the soccer match if you can't make it to the stadium. Menu highlights are typical bar snacks from Minas Gerais, like arrumadinho (brisket, boiled cassava and pork scratchings) and casquinha de siri (crab served on its shell). You can get 2 for 1 caipirinhas (a Brazilian cocktail, similar to a mojito) every Thursday, and feijoada (the most traditional Brazilian dish) at lunchtime on Saturdays.

»Bar do John

This pub is a mix of two cultures who definitely know how to have a good time! Bar do John is one of Belo Horizonte's favorite hangout spots for watching sports on TV and having a drink. Popular with Brazilians and foreigners alike, this pub has great DJs and an excellent food menu. The star of the snacks are their jacket potatoes, with traditional fillings such as bacon and cheese and more local options such as carne de sol (shredded beef jerky). Drink choices include national and imported beers (Guinness and Coopers included), spirits, wines, whiskeys, shots and cocktails.

»Clube Mineiro da Cachaça

Cachaça has been the most traditional of Brazilian drinks for the past 400 years. A spirit distilled from sugarcane whose production is concentrated in the state of Minas Gerais, it can be consumed on its own or as a mixer in cocktails. Clube Mineiro da Cachaça is probably the best place in Belo Horizonte to appreciate this drink in its various forms. The bar is run by passionate cachaça connoisseurs  who are more than happy to recommend one (or more) of their 1,200 labels, all produced in Minas Gerais, to try. The menu includes tapas-style food and a few main courses. Do try Brazilian favorites carne-de-sol (similar to beef jerky), surubi (fish) and feijão preto com jabá (black beans stew).

»Marilton's Bar

Marilton Borges is a musician and co-founder of the Clube da Esquina musical collective. Together with his brothers Marcio and Lô, and their friend Milton Nascimento, they started the movement which would become a famous part of Brazilian popular music. Marilton now runs his own bar located in the bohemian Santa Tereza area of Belo Horizonte. Marilton's Bar is dedicated to promoting Brazilian music present, past and future, so it is a great place to chill and sway to the local rhythms. A very popular spot among musicians, the bar offers a decent range of bottled beers, Clube da Esquina-inspired cocktails, cachaças and other spirits. The food menu has sharing platters and generous portions of traditional Brazilian snacks to nibble on.

»Alambique

Alambique is what a cachaça distillery is called in Portuguese. It is then no surprise that this club offers 400 labels of the drink, served on its own as shots or mixed with different types of fruit to make the most famous Brazilian cocktail, caipirinha. It is quite a spacious club with lively decoration, two VIP rooms, five bars, stage and dance floor. Alambique is well-known for its live gigs, bringing both local and national country and folk artists to perform there five nights a week. Typical bar snacks and portions of finger food can be ordered all night. Staff are very friendly and the crowds are always up for a good time.

»Barra Beer

Barra Beer is an excellent option for enthusiasts of country and folk music. It is located in the Pampulha area with beautiful views of the lake. You can sit in the balcony sipping a local lager and tasting their famous bar nibbles while listening to a local duo playing Brazilian folk songs. There is a nice and relaxed atmosphere until about midnight, when the DJs take over and turn this chilled bar into an exciting dance floor, sticking to national country music but the kind that makes you want to grab a partner and show your moves rather than just sit and listen. There are special deals if it is your birthday, so it is worth asking at the door.

»Juscelino Deck Beer

If you are going to a match at Mineirão, Juscelino Deck Beer is the perfect place to meet up with your friends or to celebrate after the soccer match. It is conveniently located by Pampulha Lake and it has a charming wooden deck terrace expanding out to the shore. The food menu is a bit pricey at first sight, but most portions serve at least two people. A varied range of pizzas, meats and seafood is available, as well as bar snacks. Drink-wise, craft beers are their specialty, but they also offer wines, whiskeys, cachaças and cocktails.
