7th of September Square (Praça Sete)
7th of September Square marks ground zero of the city of Belo Horizonte, which was founded in the late 19th century. It is located at a junction of two main avenues, making it the busiest square in town. The name of the square celebrates the date of Brazilian Independence. It was chosen in 1922, when the obelisk commemorating the 100th anniversary of the date started being built. Commonly referred to as 'Pirulito' (lollipop) by locals, it is a granite structure presented to Belo Horizonte by neighbor town of Betim. It made national news at the end of 2012, when a local shopkeeper officially requested that the square be used as a UFO landing pad, but was turned down by the authorities.
