translates as 'beautiful horizon,' which is exactly what Pope John Paul II saw when he stood on Israel Pinheiro Square in 1980 to celebrate mass. Since then, this spot acquired the nickname of "Pope's Square" and a monument has been erected there as a reminder of his visit. The square is located at the foot of the Curral Hills that surround the city and it has two levels. The lower level has a green area and a playground, and the upper level features a large staircase and a viewpoint providing glorious views over the city. Occasionally there are music and theater shows on this spot, as well as religious events due to its connection with the Catholic Church.
