Located in California's Central Valley, Bakersfield is a city that has thrived off of agricultural production since it was founded in the 1800s. Though the city is a thriving agrarian mecca, Bakersfield has managed to build a name for itself as a fairly respectable artistic hub with organizations like the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra. First starting out as a community orchestra with adults and student instrumentalists in the 1920, it would exist for for nearly a decade until it officially became the Bakersfield Orchestra in 1932, with the intent of playing two compositional classics every year. It has since become a heatedly more professional company, performing numerous shows around the year, playing a range of material including modern symphonic pieces and more revered pieces from the likes of Beethoven and Mozart

Hailing from Illinois, Suzy Bogguss a country music singer/songwriter who got her start performing music at the age of five in her church's choir. After making the rounds of her town's club circuit several times she embarked on a tour of the US to promote her self-released album, Suzy, in 1980. Bogguss relocated to Nashville and worked as a demo singer until she finally earned a contract with Liberty Capitol label. She released her Somewhere Between, in 1989, blending traditional and modern country music styles together. The combination earned her critical acclaim and she was subsequently named the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist. Despite her early success, she took a brief hiatus in the mid-1990s to start a family with her husband, songwriter Doug Crider. Upon her return the music industry, she lost her commercial appeal and turned to independent labels to release her songs. Bogguss continues to record and perform around the country to her loyal, close-knitt following.

    »Marty Stuart

    October 25, 2014 7:30 PM

John Martin Stuart goes by his nickname Marty Stuart and is widely known for his blend of classic country and rockabilly music. Born in Philadelphia, Stuart developed a taste for country music that prompted him to teach himself how to play the guitar and mandolin. Before he was even a teenager, he was performing with the bluegrass band The Sullivans. After meeting Lester Flatt guitarist Roland White, Stuart was invited to be a permanent part of the band and played with it broke up in 1978. Stuart moved on to work with fiddler Vassar Clements, guitarist Doc Watson and perhaps most notably, he joined Johnny Cash's back up band in 1980. His initial solo albums With a Little Help From My Friends and Busy Bee Cafe, respectively from 1979 and 1982, were created strictly out of a bluegrass lens and never saw commercial success. Stuart left Johnny Cash's band in 1985 to seriously pursue a solo career. Signed to MCA Records, he released his first acclaimed album in 1989 titled Hillbilly Rock, which earned him praise for incorporating rockabilly with southern honky tonk sounds. Over the next two decades, Stuart recorded 14 studio albums, published photos and articles covering the country music scene, received his own country music television show and served on the board of the Country Music Foundation, submerging himself in everything country and solidifying his name as one of the most versatile musicians in the genre.
