    »Murder By Death

    October 24, 2014 8:30 PM

Imagine you're traveling throughout the South, possibly traversing the rural country side of Georgia or Alabama, and you stop for refreshments in some podunk village. As you walk into the convenience store to grab a soda, or whatever cold beverage you're craving, you notice some music coming through the rusted speakers of the market. The singer's haunting, baritone croon is fairly morose sounding and the downtempo nature of the band's instrumentals highlight an unusual instrument that is rarely used to its full potential in rock bands: a cello. The music is perfectly suited for the Southern Gothic situation you currently find yourself in and you begin to disappear into the scene. Though it's highly unlikely to hear a song by the Bloomington, Indiana based indie rock troupe Murder by Death in such a way, it's slightly comforting to think that the band's musicians create music specifically for scenes like this. The band makes music that is rather languid and baneful, but its also quite uplifting due to the deeply intelligent compositional style and lyrics.

»Say Brother, Death On Two Wheels

    October 25, 2014 8:00 PM

Death On Two Wheels is an Atlanta-based five-piece formed to attempt to recapture some of the spirit of guitar-driven classic rock. The band specifically focuses on the brand of Southern rock made popular in the 70s by bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers, albeit with a rougher, almost punk rock feel at times. Vocalist, Trae Vedder, owns a crackling rasp of a voice that lends itself well to the band's blues-based guitar solos and touch of psychedelia. Death On Two Wheels released its first album, Separation of Church & Fate, in 2009.

    »Motopony

    October 28, 2014 7:30 PM

Based out of Seattle and led by singer/songwriter and former fashion designer Daniel Blue, the quartet Motopony makes a characteristically Pacific Northwest-flavored style of music the group likes to refer to as "glitch-folk;" a meandering sub-genre of the freak folk scene. Receiving a good amount of attention in the summer of 2011 for both its recorded output and its fairly ardent touring schedule, Motopony helped set the stage for what can only be expected to be a rise to notoriety. Managing to incorporate an adequate amount of modern studio production into its well-rounded sound, Motopony has created a unique sonic aesthetic that sounds like it's a byproduct of the 21st Century American folk community.
