St. Mary's Church or Mariakirke is a must visit attraction while you are in Bergen. One of the most ancient structures around, this twelfth century church is definitely worth a visit. Dedicated to Virgin Mary, it was built in 1180 and is a fine example of Romanesque style of architecture. The highlight of this church is the splendid pulpit which has figurines that depict different aspects of Christianity. A trip to this church makes for an interesting cultural and religious experience.
One of the most ancient and historic treasures of the city of Bergen and to some extent even Norway, is the Bergehus Festning. Popular as Bergen Fortress, the place consists of various ancient buildings which date back to as early as the 12th century. Experiencing landmark milestones, the place is primarily a royal castle containing a grand hall, several cathedrals and a bishop's residence. Having undergone major refurbishments post World War II and a few fortifications after that, the Bergen Festning is now open to general public as a tourist attraction with an inbuilt museum. Local feasts are also held in one of its halls and the Rosenkrantz tower of the fortress is another primary attraction.
Dedicated to Norway's ancient King St. Olav, Bergen Domkirke, or Bergen Cathedral, has remained loyal to its dedication since 1181 AD. According to the Sverre Saga, King Sverre and his army utilized the cathedral as a refuge when they were attacked nearly 900 years ago. The church has survived numerous fires and battles through the years, but it has maintained its general appearance and authenticity - most notably its main tower that still shows the cannon ball strike. Korskirken, or in English "Holy Cross Church", is a cruciform church dating back to 1181 AD. The church has had numerous modifications through the years and, consequently, has a variety of architectural features from the different ages with Romanesque, Baroque, Renaissance, and Gothic features. Today, there are nearly 2000 members at Korskirken, and the church's central location has rendered it a meeting place for worshippers in the area.
A small square or common that stretches across a long street is Torgallmenningen. Extremely popular for its fire history, this road is similar to a few others in the city, in terms of their fire prone nature. Renamed twice, this area has witnessed historic fire break outs quite a few times. Since long Torgallmenningen has been one of the dream design projects by the city council in order to revamp it into a huge Bergen venue. A landmark which surely cannot be missed!
Regarded as the tallest of the seven mountains near Bergen strip, the Ulriken is a spectacular mountain that soars at a height of 2100 feet. The mountain offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area, and reveals the natural beauty that its environs behold. There's an aerial tramway to bring people atop as well as cable car services for visitors. Apart from that, there's a TV tower and a restaurant at its peak. The Fantoft Stavkirke (Fantoft Stave Church) was originally built in Fortun in 1150 and was shifted to its present spot in Bergen in 19th Century. The church which is found today in a serene locale is the recreated version of the stave church as the original structure was demolished in 1992. The church was then restored to its exact original form in 1997 and is open for public tours between the months of May and September.
The Troldhaugen was the former residence of the famous composer Edvard Grieg. Featuring rich artistic treasures, the historic home now a renowned museum displays permanent exhibits of the veteran. On display are the musical collections of the renowned composer. During the fall season, there are concerts and events held at the site.
